This year’s eclipse could bring real darkness upon the US

Looking forward to the total eclipse of the sun this August across the US? Well, you might get a bit concerned after reading this piece in the Washington Post. Here’s a warning from DN that things will probably get pretty wooey this summer.

Religious leaders are promoting the predictable, explainable, perfectly natural event as a sign from god that End Times are on their way. Besides that, millions of people will be crowding into areas of totality and possibly hurting their eyes by unsafely viewing the sun. Then, even though the event will be over in minutes, the chaos may be just beginning.

[Gary] Ray, a writer for the evangelical Christian publication Unsealed, views this eclipse as one of several astronomical signs that the day when Christians will be whisked away from the Earth is fast approaching.

“The Bible says a number of times that there’s going to be signs in the heavens before Jesus Christ returns to Earth. We see this as possibly one of those,” Ray said about the eclipse.

[…] Ray thinks the two eclipses that are slated to travel across the United States in 2017 and 2024, together marking an X across the nation, could be the starting and ending signs bookmarking a seven-year period of awful tribulations that Revelations says waits in store for nonbelievers who are left behind on Earth when the Rapture occurs.

September 23 marks a celestial configuration in the constellation Virgo that some see as prophesied in the Book of Revelation.

Astronomers don’t see this as a particularly unusual event. But to Ray and others, it could be the sign that the Rapture is ready to happen: “We think it’s God signaling to us that he’s about to make his next move.”

Nice of God to tell us ahead of time. Or these people are deluded. End Times has been constantly predicted for centuries. However, now that every day moves the US towards seemingly greater political instability, and with many in Congress and the White House as believers in End Times and New World Order scenarios, I’m doubtful that potentially serious religion-related panic can be avoided this time. I expect to see an increasing wave of the following:

  • Rapture-themed preparations
  • Reports of “sky noises”
  • Potential suicide pacts
  • Connection of various events and signs to “end of the world” ideas

I hope I’m wrong. But let’s be positive! There are no physical reasons why any eclipse will cause natural catastrophes on earth. Find how close you are to the path of totality here.
