15 Credibility Street #4: A virtual flood of news – bad, good, real, fake and otherwise

In this episode, after a disheartening election result, we spend time catching up on other questionable claims reviewing all the news stories posted since last time.

Some commentators totally missed the point about the Michelle Obama fake picture post – that story was not for you. We reflect on the value of going outside our circle of skeptical friends. We visited paranormal-themed presentations and witnessed how little critical thinking is exhibited. People just want to believe, not to know. This is getting really scary now… it’s way past time that the skeptical community quit navel-gazing and do something actually useful.

brianregal-2e16d0ba-fill-735x490Sharon visited the Fringe NJ convention and chats with Brian Regal of Kean University in New Jersey about the quality of amateur research and the absolute need to consult primary sources.

In the podcast, Sharon mentions a speaker (who stated she recommends her clients with grief issues seek help from psychic mediums) who was listed as having a PhD. At the time, we didn’t know what her degree was in. Well, it was in Philosophy with specialization in Spiritual Psychology, from the Union Institute & University, Cincinnati, OH – a distance learning school with some past credibility issues. Spiritual Psychology? Color me unsurprised… So, she was certainly talking within her field of expertise but it was all BS, nonetheless.

Hey Sharon- I think your link above is for episode 3 rather than episode 4. I found episode 4 link at the end of this one, though.

P.S. Some of us old folks know what memes are, and are not so easily fooled. 🙂

The link you have is to episode 3. Currently attempting to download episode 4, but it seems to be entitled ‘Episode 3, Mix 2’.

Sharon, I don’t know if anyone else is having this problem, but your audio seems to be really low compared with Howard’s.

In episode 4, I didn’t notice that at all, but I have more trouble hearing male voices sometimes. Maybe for me it evens out.
