A United Launch Alliance Atlas V blasted into space Wednesday morning carrying a Navy communications satellite and creating a spectacular light show that had some people wrongly worried that the rocket had blown up.
The launch was very bright across Florida, from St. Petersburg to Key West. Because of the timing of the launch prior to sunrise, the smoke from the engines made spectacular formations in the sky that were widely visible. A meteorologist here describes why the trail looked so strange with some people thinking something went wrong.
Rocket was carrying the Navy’s $7.6 billion system to help troops make secure calls.
