Giant snake photo hoax (Expanded)

Heads up for this hoax:

snake hoax

This picture is going around social media such as Facebook. It is a blatantly bad photoshop of a green anaconda into another photo of people to skew the size. Also, the Amazon is NOT in Africa. Shake your head and walk away. Better yet, post HOAX! in the comments of those who post the pic, include a link to this post and THEN shake your head and walk away.

It's a problem when the photo looks more realistic when smaller.

Addition: Karl Shuker’s piece on debunking the hoax: “unless someone had thoughtfully embedded a veritable ‘kill-o-meter’ inside the anaconda, how could anyone state so precisely how many humans and animals it had killed?”

It was linked to the timeline of one Rakesh Mintu Bjp, and when I clicked that link it took me to an annotated version of the photo on this person’s timeline. I also checked online outside Facebook, and the photo and annotation had already appeared on many other websites during the past month or so. Consequently, neither had originated with Bjp – he had merely posted one such copy on his FB timeline, as had several other persons, I discovered, which means that the originator of the photo and annotation is currently unknown.

Also, Africa isn’t a country and it isn’t Britain so why ‘British Commandos’ would belong there is anyone’s guess.

I haven’t seen that one being circulated by any of my South African friends. Hopefully they all know that there is no Amazon river here. But if they do post it, I’ll be sure to link to this page.

I don’t think the Photoshop is too bad – I’ve seen far worse. But the giveaway (apart from reading the description) has to be the size. Surely if something like that were real, there would be more than one image. I’d expect to see several images from different angles, in high resolution. And the snake in the photo looks very much alive… Doubtful that people would be casually loafing around a giant snake.

In fact, the Amazon was once in the super continent called Anacondaland.

    According to Wikipedia:

“Anacondaland included most of the landmasses in today’s Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctica, South America, Africa, Madagascar, and the Australian continent, as well as the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian Subcontinent, which have now moved entirely into the Northern Hemisphere.”

It is possible, though not likely, that there are Anaconda in Africa, Madagascar, Antarctica, and of course Australia, anything goes in Australia.

No one has caught and measured an anaconda anywhere near that size. It is important to note that when a dead anaconda’s hide or skin is laid out it can be stretched very easily, expanding to much longer lengths than the snake exhibited when alive.
