Siblings face jail for exorcism death of ill mother in Poland

Another case of illness being blamed on demons. Exorcism kills.

This is being circulated by the Daily Mail. I won’t link to that but the other sources are not great. I expect the original story is in Polish. If someone can verify this, I would greatly appreciate it.

A brother and sister duo who tortured their pensioner mother to death during an exorcism are facing jail.

Piotr Majewski, 38, and Barbara Majewski, 39, from the town of Ostrowiec, in south-central Poland, claimed they thought their mother’s Alzheimer’s was a sign that she was possessed by the devil.

They tied her to the bed and forced her to drink water. She continually stated she was not in league with Satan or communicating with the spirit of her dead husband. Then they started beating her. An autopsy showed that she had broken ribs, a shattered jaw and brain trauma.

Back in 2012, we reported on how exorcism was growing in popularity in Poland. At that time there was a report that a magazine was being published about exorcisms. We remarked that making exorcism more mainstream will CERTAINLY foster greater belief and encourage people to attempt it. Why wouldn’t they if they believe? Good going. Now you’ve killed someone. How many more will suffer and die with the resurgence of this horrific, ridiculous ritual? Shame on the Catholic Church and those coat-tail riders for taking society backwards yet again.

The magazine, Egzorcysta, is run by priests who say that media depictions of exorcisms are largely accurate. Oh really? Where is the documentation of that? Can you imagine the funding the church would get if they could prove demonic possession to psychologists? What utter bullshit. I can find no date on this murder so there is no obvious link to the magazine. However, the idea of exorcism as a viable treatment seems to be spreading. Incredible. The Catholic Church tries to prevent people from doing this sort of thing. It insists that a formal exorcism may only performed after all natural causes of illness have been ruled out and then done in a manner that doesn’t physically harm the person being exorcised. Blaming the Catholic Church for this incident is like blaming modern plastic surgeons for illegal injections of silicon sealant.

Except silicone sealant is a real thing, demons and boogeymen are not.

I’m inclined to agree. It would be nice to wave my magical rationality wand so nobody believed in demons, but I think we’ll be waiting a blamed long time for that. Absent that, it seems a lot more healthy to route exorcism cases to people who start the examination with

“Have you seen a doctor? Which doctor? I need to discuss the case with him first because a lot of demonic possession are really treatable mental illnesses.”
