I see dead people thanks to this app

I really don’t think it was that the app worked…

Woman ends up in hospital after seeing spirits everywhere – Nation | The Star Online.

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman is in hospital after she allegedly saw spirits while trying out a so-called ghost-hunting application on her smartphone, Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported.

Not much to go on here. She just seemed freaked out by an app that showed ghosts. Did she just go off the deep end with belief in that it controlled her? Or was she mentally unstable? It’s unclear but this may be an example of the availability of these concepts as “real” (ghosts, aliens, Bigfoot, demons) in the world is enough to cause a few to really lose their sanity over it.

Whatever the story is, it’s a reminder that there is a subjective line between fantasy-fiction and reality.

If the app was similar to a program I used on my laptop, it uses the antenna as a sensor. The varying strength of RF signals is mapped on the screen and anything over a certain (unknown) value is tagged as a ghost. Sold as a joke, although you can get some pretty screen art. If Ms. Wu freaked out, it was self-inflicted.

Read couple of versions some time ago. Some very bad translations, or bad English in English versions of Chinese papers. Gist got was on anniversary of a family members death or alternately just after a funeral. The phone apps are all a con & “For entertainment purposes only”. Have downloaded a couple just so i could say i’d tried them before i trashed em online. Most told me the cupboard under my sink, toilet, & blocked up fireplace were haunted. The toilet is where they should be thrown. Obsessives & desperate people actually believe in the hype & publicity & think they are real. This rubbish should be stopped, but what legislation do you use?

I disagree that the apps should be stopped; they state they are for entertainment purposes after all. I think it is a slippery slope to start banning apps/products/media because the minority lack the common sense not to hurt themselves. Even if they are asinine.. We live in enough of a nanny state as it is.
