This is almost a template for a classic ghost story. The ghost torments her murderer into confessing.
An elderly man who said he had been haunted in his dreams by his wife since he killed her in a fit of anger and dumped her body in a pond has been arrested by police and charged with murder.
He told police he was so bothered by the dreams that he was about to turn himself in. Phu Wiang police said the body of Orn Donkanha, 67, was found in a pond near Wat Santikaram in tambon Song Peuy of Phu Wiang district on April 15. She had been bashed on the left temple with hard object and had been dead around three days when she was found.
The man had argued with his partner on the way home from an event. He admitted to picking up a wood plank and hitting her. Then, dumped her body and he left to live with relatives. When the police came to arrest him, he confessed all, including that his wife who threatened to keep haunting him if he did not confess.
Ghosts can be useful as social devices, even if they are not really the spirits of the dead returning. This man was feeling great guilt that ate at his conscience. Or, his wife continued to nag him after death (which is what he may have thought). Not only was this a typical ghost tale but it is illustrative of a sad case of domestic violence against women.
The “vengeful ghost” remains a popular belief and paranormal motif.
