Un-stylish haircut hoax

North Korea propaganda is always good for a joke.

Mandatory Kim Jong Un haircuts a baldfaced lie?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s distinctive hairstyle is the ‘do of the day on the Internet, thanks to a viral report that every male university student in the capital is now under orders to get a buzz just like it. But it appears the barbers of Pyongyang aren’t exactly sharpening their scissors.

Recent visitors to the country say they’ve seen no evidence of any mass haircutting. North Korea watchers smell another imaginative but uncorroborated rumor.

Radio Free Asia was one of the sources who propagated the rumor but cited only unnamed sources for an unwritten directive from somewhere within the ruling Workers’ Party. Oh, very convincing. Silly stories out of North Korea are a thing… Unicorns, relatives fed to dogs, etc. – because the real stories are kooky too. It’s hard to tell what to believe.

Sources in North Koren say there is no sign of a mass buzz cut occurring. Thank goodness.

There is a tradition with media uncritically accepting to be true whatever wacky antics the North Koreans are said to be up to. Bonus points for stories of strange and atrocious horror. It’s always a good thing for us Americans to look at and think to ourselves, “At least my country isn’t THAT bad!”

Well, of course it’s not. America is big, on a lot of fertile land and her people aren’t subject to trade restrictions that make them virtual slaves to China.

All he needs to do is add a mullet! It will sweep the U.S.!

That haircut is almost as stylish as wearing a little red ribbon on your left breast with a picture of the previous Glorious Leaders of your nation. Look closely at the picture of Kim; you’ll see it. It’s actually really weird. Could you imagine Barack Obama wearing a ribbon with a picture of every previous US president on it?

I believe that even China is embarrassed by, and at a loss for what to do about North Korea.

And last night (3/28/14) Jimmy Fallon, new host of The Tonight Show, gave the hoax new legs by reporting it as real in his monologue.

It starts at 3:26 in this clip.
