One person took the matter into his own hands and found a possible explanation for the irritating humming noise in a Chicago neighborhood.
A mysterious humming noise has returned to Hyde Park, perplexing neighbors, but this time there are good clues to its source.
Neighborhood resident Dean Armstrong walked the streets with audio equipment installed on his iPad, and found the sound was the loudest behind the Poinsettia Apartments at 5528 S. Hyde Park Blvd.
He noted that he could feel the vibration coming from this piece of equipment and it matched the frequency. It appears the buildings could be amplifying the sound or making it difficult to pinpoint.
Armstrong notes this could be more complicated and did not say for sure it was this particular chimney device but offered his information. The sound is not constant. When an inspection was done of the chimney by maintenance people, it was not making a noise.
Always examine ALL possible normal explanations before resorting to something off the wall.
