Trudeau “values wealth more than freedom”

Pitchman Kevin Trudeau again ordered to jail – but not until Tuesday.

A smiling Trudeau left the court allowed to attend a defense fundraiser before he is order to an indefinite jail term until he fesses up where his money is hidden.

On Wednesday, an exasperated U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman ordered the best-selling author and infomercial king jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center until he complies with the judge’s order to come clean about his assets and turn them over to satisfy the multimillion-dollar judgment.

In yet another twist in the nearly decade-old case, the judge allowed Trudeau to hold off surrendering to the federal downtown jail until Tuesday so he can attend a fundraiser in Washington for his legal defense fund.

Gettleman said he realized he was giving Trudeau a break even though the judge had been burned when he’s done so in the past. The judge also acknowledged that throwing someone in jail in a civil case was a rare step, but he hoped “the message gets through.”

“It really saddens me, Mr. Trudeau,” the judge said. “You’re a smart guy. Maybe you’re too smart. Perhaps you have outsmarted yourself, but I can’t allow this to keep going on.”

Wiley Trudeau appears to be hiding his money while still spending it. Why does this feel so icky? Oh yeah, because he is slimy.

What. A. Scumbag.

I do not understand why the judge is letting him attend a fundraiser. It seems that he’s getting special treatment especially given his history of basically saying “f— you” to the judge.

This might actually be effective psychologically. Mr. Trudeau is probably lying to himself he will win. This will reenforce what he will be giving up, indefinitely.

Although, I think the odds are low. He will sell himself on how he’s going to get 100% for too long, or at least until he runs out of appeals. He may have finally sold himself his own poison.

But I have to think part of this is the Judge is only human, and a salesman specializes in bending your mind, and this guy has spent his life looking like people’s friend. No one wants to believe that about themselves, especially a Judge who probably thinks he’s savvy.

To top it off, the Judge said it. Civil cases with jail time are rare. Judges are all about staying in the mainstream. It’s a system of peer criticism and precedent. This has to be nerve-rackingly strange, and concerns about how peers will view this will be high. Anything that will end the stalemate is going to be disproportionately appealing.

The public persona of comedian Jack Benny, as on his radio and TV shows, was of a rich and very stingy man, but unlike Kevin Trudeau (and despite near-criminal violin playing) Jack would never have done anything that would get him in jail. Here is one of the most famous lines on his radio show:
