Bomb targets polio workers in Pakistan

We’ve covered stories about anti-vax extremists in Pakistan who have murdered vaccine workers. It reached the point where the UN temporarily shut down their program. Now, bombs.

BBC News – Pakistan deadly bomb targets Peshawar polio campaign.

Two people, one a police officer, have been killed by a bomb which went off near anti-polio campaigners in Pakistan, say police.

The blast struck a van near a hospital in Budh Bher suburb of the north-western city of Peshawar.

A death toll of six was given earlier but later corrected by police.

Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic, due in part to militant resistance to polio mass vaccination campaigns.

The bomb targeted the 12 or 13 people on the team. It was reported in this piece that a larger bomb was found but defused. Peshawar is currently an area of civil unrest. But the vaccine scare was triggered by the CIA’s fake hepatitis program that was a cover to collect info on Osama bin Laden. That was a COLOSSAL screw up with ramifications yet today as Pakistan remains one of the few countries with a serious polio problem.

It should be noted that anti-vax campaigns by islamic loonies pre-dated the CIA fake hepatitis program, so, although that may have added to the problem, it is not the root cause. While that may not have been the smartest move, please let us not dilute the main issue, which is the stirring up of anti-science so prevalent amongst religionists (irrespective of which nonsensical creed they follow)!

I wonder if this will catch on in the states?

We do have a small segment of religious extremists that murder abortion providers. I wonder if the anti-vaccine demographic in the US is fanatical enough to do something similar?

We’re part of the reason they don’t trust health workers. I think of how many children will die because we had to get Ossama…and used fake aid workers. all for fighting terrorism, but not when it involved this kind of stuff that hurts real health care workers.

@ Chris Howard – I see no reason why anti-vacsers in the US would be militant. They’re usually not forced to vaccinate, and have no ideology behind their stance besides fear of vaccines. It’s not a social reason like a religious opposition are as in the case of abortion activists. Now if they start believing in conspiracies, like the government injecting tracking devices or some such thing, I suppose a few nutty ones could go militant. But it’s been fairly well proven that the nutty ones can have delusions about anything.

So what is the motive of the Muslim antivaxers? Do they think the polio virus worships Allah?

They believe vaccination is a government plot against Muslims. And I’m sure it gets even more creative than that.

They fear a systematic poisoning campaign by their enemies. With fatalities blamed on the CIA debacle, all foreign medical aid is suspect.
