A foiled scheme of prejudice, hate and death rays

Bizarre. But the reporting system worked. People got nervous about this guy, reported him, and the FBI caught up with the Supervillain scheme quickly.

2 wanted device used on enemies, officials say – Times Union.

A plot to design a radiation weapon that could fit in a small van and be used to silently kill humans was unraveled by an FBI task force that charged two men — a General Electric Co. industrial mechanic from Saratoga County and a computer software expert from Columbia County -— with conspiring to sell the weapon to Jewish groups or a southern branch of the Ku Klux Klan.

A federal complaint unsealed Wednesday in Albany said the vehicle-mounted radiation gear was intended to be remotely controlled and capable of aiming a high-energy lethal beam of radioactivity at human targets. The concept was that victims would mysteriously die from radiation poisoning within days.

The investigation so far details how the men attempted to build the device (called “Hiroshima on a light switch”) by obtaining X-ray tubes. The article notes that they never obtained the radioactive material and the device would NOT have worked as intended anyway.

Check out this excellent report by the Albany Times Union for a chronology of the case. The TU also consulted radiation experts who called the device “far-fetched” and unfeasible. A radiation device needs a tremendous amount of energy to ramp up and generates huge amounts of heat which can cause melting. If it was easy to do, I expect someone might have done it already. A look at modern technology shows how complex such devices would be.

“It seems like it could be possible,” said Tim Stevens, editor-in-chief of Engadget, a leading tech blog and web-based magazine that generates five million to 15 million hits worldwide each day. “It is very, very bizarre but it seems like it could be developed, at least in theory. It would be very large and very expensive. It’s also very unlikely that two guys could pull this off and put in a truck. The power and engineering requirements are extremely challenging.”

Another safeguard that foiled this plan was the difficulty in obtaining radioactive material. Regulation and vigilance works.

The evidence shows they were anti-Obama. Additional info shows that they had another particular person in mind. Gov. Cuomo was death ray target of Ku Klux Klansman – NY Daily News.

They tried to take over the world. And failed. Now jailed.

I came for the death ray and stayed for the Pinky and the Brain screen shot.

Maybe this is supposed to be obvious, but I suspect that the real plot was to swindle some money out of one of these groups by offering a fancy weapon which would never be made.

Why did they need radioactive material? An X-ray emitter doesn’t require it. Is there some confusion here between radioactive and radiation?
