Jessica Adams says astrology predicted MIT shooting. Hang on…

The Heresy Club has a scathing piece about how an astrologer appears to have taken credit for predicting the shooting of the officer at MIT in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Yep, this is ridiculous. I know the question you are going to ask next…

Piling on. | The Heresy Club.

The author is just plain not nice in this piece but I’d make no apologies either because Jessica Adams took credit for this.

I included two of the replies so you can see how that went over. And because I give thumbs up to the comments.

The link in the tweet goes here, to Jessica’s page about Mars where we find complete drivel:

What does this Full Moon mean? Well, don’t panic. This is a constructive conflict. It’s a tug of war in the heavens, inside yourself – or inside other people – with tremendous positive potential.

The reason I say that is the presence of the asteroid Ops. She is Saturn’s wife. She is also Jupiter’s mother. Jupiter represents optimism. That is partly because of his mother Ops, whose name is hidden inside the word.

As a horoscope symbol she describes people and situations which save the day. Ops is powerful.

If you buy into this stuff, if any of this sounds meaningful to you, (that an asteroid is the mother of a planet????) I am very very sorry for you. You need help, and not from an astrologer.

Some skeptics made a huge deal that other skeptics wondered why no psychic, or astrologer for that matter, predicted the Boston events. They were a pretty big deal, terrorized people for almost a week, shut down a major city for a day and caused massive trauma and death. I did not mention it myself because to pick on psychics for epic fails is easier than shooting fish in a barrel. But in this case, where one CLAIMS to have predicted this, it is fair game for piling on.

The prediction is vague and worthless. If astrology (which has NO basis in reality) or psychic ability (which as no viable mechanism) even work a sliver of the time (no decent evidence that they do), then they are profoundly unhelpful since they didn’t do a damn thing in this case.

Aside from the obvious blunder of this so-caled prediction, It’s sad to see that this ‘new atheism’ is producing the same kind of self-righteousness (you might even call them true non-believers) that is usually described of zealots and extremists.
“The blithering excuse for refuse who would proudly claim a hit out of the MIT shooting is the type of person I wish Congress would have filibustered into never opening their mouths in public ever again.”
    Not exactly rational discourse.

Don’t be too flip about shooting fish in a barrel. It’s not as easy as it sounds and it’s really hard on the barrel. 😉

It’s so easy to make a vague prediction before or after an event. I am so (not) surprised at how psychics an other woo woos never seem to be able to predict a major disaster until after the fact.
