The conspiracy and alternative treatment claims swirl around Chavez death

The Venezuelan President is dead at age 58 from cancer. He was a controversial figure steeped in conspiracy theories. But did he die prematurely because of using alternative cancer treatments?

Hugo Chavez received Mayan cosmic energies, says Rigoberta Menchu. But it didn’t help.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was sent strong Mayan cosmic energies and will overcome all obstacles, according to Rigoberta Menchu.

Menchu, and another 20 “wise men” are gathered in Caracas since Thursday, to work on helping Chavez’s health improve by performing Mayan healing ceremonies.

“I am absolutely positive President Hugo Chavez received cosmic energy because our medicine comes from the deepest places of Mother Earth,” Menchu said during an official event

Back in December 2011, when his cancer was announced, he wondered if the US was infecting world leaders with cancer.  Last March, his prognosis looked poor but it was rumored he was rejecting intensive conventional treatment.

In mid-February, as he was out of the public eye during treatment. This story suggests he was undergoing alternative treatments.

Through all the media speculation, the truth regarding President Hugo Chavez’s condition has been kept quiet. He eventually started receiving all medical treatment in Cuba where his medical records could be kept private.

At this point in time, all accounts indicate Chavez is still alive and recovering, but as to what particular form of alternative treatment he is receiving, no one knows.

So, we don’t really know if he was getting conventional treatment and supplementing with these alternatives or if he eschewed certain treatment for homeopathy or other unproven and non-scientific treatment. It’s likely we WON’T ever know if he could have lived longer if he had chosen differently.

Here is a rundown on the current conspiracies going around regarding his death.

Did he actually die in Cuba? Did he die last month or under suspicious circumstances? The U.S. rejects the absurd claims that America had something to do with giving him cancer. And, there is the obligatory idea that he still lives.

As has been the norm for the past several newsworthy events, conspiracies swirl immediately and blur fact and fiction.

The fact that he spent so much time in Cuba, which has one of the best medical services in the world –despite the US best efforts ;)– leads one to suspect that for the most part he underwent allopathic medical treatment.

Although *my* personal conspiracy theory is that he went to Cuba to receive transfusions of Fidel Castro’s blood –I mean think about it: all the decades that the CIA tried to kill him! surely in his blood lies the secret of immortality 😛

Yes, that’s why the US placed embargoes on Cuba, to destroy their medical infrastructure. /sarcasm

While an embargo certainly makes life more difficult, Cuba has no shortage of trading partners. The US does not specifically target medical services and in many cases exempts medical supplies from sanctions. Please don’t make such careless statements.

Yeah, those who are willing to risk angering the Americans and suffering economic sanctions themselves.

US legislation allows Cuba to purchase some medicines [emphasis mine], but Havana chooses not to buy directly, opting instead to purchase US medicine from third countries.

At the risk of derailing the thread, is it so difficult to realize the reason the Castro bros have lasted so long in Cuba is thanks to the US embargo?

Srsly, you have managed to become the Cubans’ Goldstein. If there’s shortage of anything in that island, the socialist regime can blame it on the Yanqui Imperialists.

If you had terminated the stupid blockade when the Soviet era ended, I can guarantee you that by now the Cubans would be well on their way to democracy.

I disagree with you, but I’m not going to comment further as that is not the purpose of this blog.

My conspiracy theory has to do with that bird on his shoulder and the hat.

Regardless of what he did in his life, that picture of him is awesome. I only hope the head plumage of the bird and his hat were intentional.

Even with the best and most advanced treatment, cancer patients do die, sometimes suddenly and unexpectedly — as you say, we may never know what blend of valid medicine and “traditional” or homeopathic cures he attempted, or how the treatments impacted his life expectancy
