Strange sound generated by winds through unfinished 1WTC (Freedom Tower)

A forboding and eerie sound reverberated in NYC as the gusts from Hurricane Sandy turned the new Freedom Tower into a spooky wind instrument – an aeolian harp.

Here is the video of it:

The only source I can find that also mentions it is The Daily Beast. New York City’s Sandy Disaster: A Meteorological 9/11?

Does wind through buildings and structures also explain the many strange sounds we heard at the beginning of this year?

A wind harp (aeolian harp) is a series of metal rungs that will vibrate with the wind and generate sound. That is indeed what happened in the upper reaches of the skyscraper as the hurricane winds rushed through the metal scaffolding.

In Sand Point in Seattle there is an actual Sound Garden. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the band of the same name comes from Seattle. I used to go to work at the National Marine Fisheries Service right next to the structure and I’ve eaten lunch there several times. I’m certain it’s the same phenomenon:

I live in the neighborhood… At least a good part of the noise folks on the ground were attributing to wind through the structure was instead the many building in the area running their emergency backup generators. In addition to 1 WTC, there are many telecom/data farm buildings in the neighborhood and many have their own emergency generators which were all kicking into gear at the time.
