Homeopath claims cure for dengue with one study

Lab finds homeo cure for dengue – The Times of India.

A homeopathic drug extracted from a plant native to the US and used as a traditional medicine in that country the 19th century, promises a cure for dengue, says a study by the state-run King Institute of Preventive Medicine.

The King Institute team headed by a Chennai-based homoeopath administered the drug extracted from Eupatorium perfoliatum to 50 patients with secondary dengue and found all of them recovered. “The platelet counts came under control for almost all patients and blood tests showed marked improvement,” said King Institute director Dr P Gunasekaran. The study, lead by Dr N R Jayakumar of Madan Homoeo Clinic, was presented at an international symposium on ‘Challenges and strategies in the prevention and management of viral infections’ at Central Learther Research Institute recently.

I’m unclear that this is a homeopathic preparation or an actual herbal remedy. Regardless, you don’t just get to say “IT WORKS!” and people should believe you. That’s not science. This claim is bogus until proven. Where’s the data, where’s the paper, where’s the replication? Without that, it could very well be nonsense and very dangerous nonsense at that.

Most Dengue sufferers survive and recover, despite the fact that no direct treatment is yet medically available. Nothing in the OP’s link indicates the number of survivors or how long they required to recuperate. Nor do they say how many of their patients died from lack of blood transfusions.

Per Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever), Dengue Fever is a hemorrhagic fever caused by a virus, and is transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Since both Dengue and the Aedes aegypti are endemic here in Baguio, Philippines, I take great care not to be bitten. Every year, babies in the Philippines in particular die from Dengue. Dengue scares the crap out of me, and it ticks me off when quacks like homeopaths claim a cure!

Dengue is also known as “Breakbone Fever” due to the horrible joint pains caused by the bleeding it causes in joints and muscles. Like other hemorrhagic fevers, it causes widespread internal bleeding because it reduces the clotting factor.

The mortality rate for Dengue is 1-5%, so 95-99% of sufferers recover! It is outright deception by this quack to claim his homeopathic nostrum has anything at ll too do with it. I also note that the study says it WITHHELD blood transfusions. I see withholding transfusions as very dangerous malpractice. That all 50 study patients recovered is unimpressive, given the fairly low rate of mortality for Dengue. Such a single study of a few dozen people is statistically meaningless, and is only being used to dishonestly promote the popularity of the totally prescientific magic-based quackery of homeopathy.

I’d written “Nor do they say how many of their patients died from lack of blood transfusions.” Mentally delete that, please. None of their patients died, they imply.
