A toddler died during what is believed to be a 20-hour exorcism ritual.
Police stormed a double-storey house in Taman Bukit Minyak on Sunday night and found a group of eight people lying on top of the two-year-old girl.
Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Azman Abd Lah said the family members, aged between 16 and 67, were lying on top of each other with the toddler at the bottom in the master bedroom. The lights in the room were switched off.
“The child died due to breathing difficulties,” he said. Her body has been sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post-mortem.
The case, he added, was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Children are most often the victims of “exorcisms” which is enormously tragic. As we bring these cases to light, it’s at least somewhat heartening to know that the adults who did this horrendous thing will be charged with a crime. But, sadly, it will be a long time before it ends. The profound ignorance is still with us, even in what we perceive as a modern age.
Update: (9-Aug-2012) More on the religion of the family involved.
The religious organisation at the centre of police investigation following the death of a child in a 20-hour ritual is registered with the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA). [not a cult]
The child, covered in a blanket, was found lying face down under the human pile comprising her parents, grandmother, uncle, aunt, two cousins and the maid.
A family member claimed that one of them had seen a spirit trying to “grab” the girl, prompting them to form a heap on top of her to protect her.
“We are also investigating a meditation-based centre on the island to find out more about its practices and teachings, as well as whether it had anything to do with this case.”
