Government buys 16,000 rounds of ammo. Hype conspiracy theory. You can’t lose!

Stay with me on this one…

There is this on a government website…

The DOC NOAA National Weather Service – Western Acquisition Division Boulder requires the following items, Purchase Description Determined by Line Item, to the following: LI 001, 16,000 rounds of ammunition for semiautomatic pistols to be factory-loaded .40 S&W caliber, 180-grain jacketed hollow point (JHP). No reloads may be used with these weapons. All service furnished ammunition for issued firearms will be U.S. factory production.

that got picked up and hyped by the Alex Jones Info Wars conspiracy website. (Web citation, not directly to Info Wars site)

Then, Rand Paul links to that page in a Twitter post.

So, in Rand Paul’s mind, the National Weather Service has ordered 46,000 hollow-point bullets. He then refers readers to a fringe conspiracy-theory website, which argues that President Obama may be arming weathermen as part of a larger scheme to suppress “civil unrest.”

Rand Paul sees this as a legitimate concern, and he wants his Twitter followers to be aware of it.

Regrettably, the senator neglected to check the facts before sharing this unhinged nonsense. In reality, ammunition and targets were ordered for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement. There was a clerical error on the paperwork — the ammunition isn’t going to the National Weather Service.

The Washington Post has the story here.

NOAA says there was a “clerical error” in the FedBizOpps announcement stating the NWS required ammunition. The solicitation actually originated from the “NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement” not the National Weather Service.

Due to a clerical error in the federal business vendor process, a solicitation for ammunition and targets for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement mistakenly identified NOAA’s National Weather Service as the requesting office. The error is being fixed and will soon appear correctly in the electronic federal bidding system. The ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies and it will be used by 63 NOAA enforcement agents in their twice annual target qualifications and training.

So, problem solved but wait… OF COURSE THEY WOULD COVER IT UP!

Meanwhile, the Social Security administration has to explain why they need bullets too.

The Social Security Administration posted a blog on Thursday to explain why it was planning to purchase 174,000 hollow point bullets.

SSA posted a “Request for Quote for Ammunition” on the website on Aug. 7. The request listed the commodity that SSA desired as “.357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point pistol ammunition.” The quantity listed was “174 TH.”

“These investigators have full law enforcement authority, including executing search warrants and making arrests,” the blog post states. “Our investigators are similar to your State or local police officers.

“They use traditional investigative techniques, and they are armed when on official duty,” the blog post states.

Whew! It’s Ok to be suspicious of your government but don’t go nuts! Were they planning to embark on the New World Order, they would need A LOT more bullets than THAT, sheeple!

I wonder what Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine has to say about that.

When this “news” started blowing up the blogosphere, my first thought was “Where’s the context?” In other words, these numbers really do mean nothing since we don’t know/haven’t been told how many rounds XXX agency ordered 5 years ago, 10 years ago, etc. For all we know, based on the (lazy knee jerk manipulative) reporting of this story, these agencies could actually be downsizing and this could be the smallest order placed in the past 20 years. Without the historical context, it’s every bit as likely.

You are witnessing more evidence of the mainstreaming of conspiracy theory within American conservatism. Given that Glenn Beck was the Tea Party prophet, a unifying thread for conservatives has been birtherism, and the conservative movement almost uniformly believes in a grand conspiracy regarding global warming, this is nothing new. But expect to see more direct flow from the likes of Alex Jones to “mainstream” conservative media.

I don’t get that joke. Is it suppose to reference their “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?” album or something?

Wow, I tried for a long time to really like Mustaine as a person but man, he sure as hell makes it hard when he keeps saying stupid bullshit like that.

But if an individual bought 16,000 rounds and the government thought that was mildly interesting, those same people would be going ape shit. Funny how that works.

ABC said James Holmes stockpiled >6000 rounds in just 60 days. 16,000 is far from adequate to disarm our nation’s “well-regulated militias.”

Less than $4800 (presuming discount for bulk buying). For an entire organization.

Yes, positively terrifying. Funny how that works.

I just perused about 10 “news” sites discussing this and none of these ace reporters thought to call their local law enforcement agency and ask them what they thought about this quantity.
