Photo of “Forest boy” released – Ray’s history is still a mystery (UPDATE: Solved)

In an update to a story from last year, there are still no answers to the mystery boy who walked out of the forest without knowing who he was.

Who is Ray, the boy with the ‘adventurous story’?

Berlin police have released a photograph of the mysterious “forest boy” who turned to authorities nine months ago saying he lived in a wood for five years and did not know who he was.

Police in the German capital sent a picture of the smiling blond boy wearing a T-shirt and a gold necklace to news outlets asking for help in getting to the bottom of a story that captured the world’s imagination last year.

“Despite the extensive studies and investigations, the youth office and the Berlin police were still not successful in identifying the boy who calls himself Ray,” the police statement, which was published in German and English, said.

“The youth office and the Berlin police have great doubts about the boy’s story,” they said in the police statement.

Tip: Fortean Times

The police have resorted to crowd-sourcing their search. I am a bit confused because there was a story that he was possibly identified by a Swiss couple as being their grandson. The DNA test must not have panned out.

Update: (14-June-2012): This boy’s story was a hoax.

The 20-year-old hoaxer, who claimed he was 17 and lived in the German woods for five years, is actually from Hengelo, Netherlands. He never lived in the forest and made his way to Berlin sometime last year, police said.

Police say the man has admitted his story is a lie and confirmed his identity. He will have to leave a Berlin city youth home since he is not under age, as he had claimed.

Police say that not long after the first pictures of the man were published, a female acquaintance recognized him, she told a Dutch TV network. The network informed the Dutch police, who then notified authorities in Berlin.

There is no answer as to why he did this.

It appears that the German authorities could have solved this a year ago, if they’d only released a photo right away. I never understood that part. It took, what, 3 days for his mom to ID him? I put most of the responsibility for the trouble and expense with the gullible police, for believing a ridiculous lie, and then failing to ask the public for help.
