Seal Beach mystery creature

Mystery Creature Washes Ashore in Seal Beach – wsbt.com.

An unidentified creature was discovered Wednesday by a woman taking her daily walk along the shore in Seal Beach.

Karen Summers says she animal corpse didn’t look like anything she nad ever witnessed.

She called officials from the Public Works Department, who arrived Friday morning and disposed of the unidentified animal.

As noted in the article, this creature bears a resemblance to the infamous Montauk monster. It looks weird, for sure, but furless creatures always look weird, especially after being immersed in water for a long time. Decomposition and the effect of the water results in fur loss and discoloration.

It’s hard to determine what this thing might be because of the low resolution of the photo and no object in the picture we could use as scale. Previous mystery carcasses have been revealed to be a raccoon, opossum, seal, whale, or fish. It could be anything but it’s LIKELY NOT some new mystery species. It’s just the unusual condition that freaks people out.

Watch for this “mystery” to travel around social media as a mutant monster (they always do) which is why I suspect the news station covered it to begin with. People like mysteries.

Unless better images become available, it’s hard to even speculate much more than “mammal”.

Here’s a link to a video of the report from KTLA News about this mystery creature.

UPDATE: Dr. Darren Naish concludes Virginia opossum.

Yeah the footage is crap, but look at the feet at about 40 seconds in. Unless there’s some other North American mammal with an opposable ‘thumb’ on their hind feet, I’d say this is definitely an opossum.

Right. The back feet are a giveaway. You can sort of see it in the screen capture.

Why do all these mutant creatures and cryptids look like severely decomposed animals, where the decomposition is so severe that it’s hard to identify them without a zoologist taking a careful look at the bones and teeth? No wonder so many people get tricked into thinking there are no mysterious mutant creatures running about. It’s such an annoying coincidence that we only find these super decomposed cryptids. And oh yeah, too bad about that big government conspiracy to pay off all those scientists who do check out the teeth and bones to report that they are really dogs and racoons and such, when in reality we all know that they must be unknown mutant cryptids and there can’t possibly be any other explanation that makes sense.
