Indian skeptic charged with blasphemy for revealing a miracle hoax

Indian skeptic charged with “blasphemy” for revealing secret behind “miracle” of weeping cross.

Sanal Edamaruku, an Indian skeptic, went to Mumbai and revealed that a “miraculous” weeping cross was really just a bit of statuary located near a leaky drain whose liquid reached it by way of capillary action. The local Catholic Church demanded that he retract his statements, and when he refused, they had him arrested for blasphemy.

Yesterday (10th April,2012) Sanal received a phone call from a Police official of Juhu Police Station in Mumbai directing him to come to the said police station to face the charges and get arrested.

Several online bloggers attempted to get the news out about Sanal’s arrest.
Letter from Sanal Edamaruka defence committee

Immediate Release-Rationalist under threat of arrest for exposing the “miracle”

But, having this out on Boing Boing IS HUGE!!! It’s wonderful exposure. As the letter from his defense committee explains:

..threatening to arrest a well known rationalist who has been exposing miracles and superstitious beliefs for more than three decades is a serious attack on the freedom of expression.

Clause (h) of Article 51-A of Constitution of India states that :
‘It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop the scientific temper, humanism and spirit of inquiry and reform.’
In exposing the said miracle, Sanal was performing his fundamental duty enshrined in our constitution.
It is distressing that the Mumbai police has chosen to harass and victimize him for doing his fundamental duty.

    – Wow hope he’s OK, I’ve met him cos when I was last in New Delhi he invited me to his office for coffee. He’s a good man, but in India mysticism is such a huge huge business and there are only a few brave people like him countering it.
    – Things can get a bit bizarre in India compared to Western Europe or N America.

Have they not learned to never question organised religion? Especially when it comes to exposing RATIONAL explanation??
