American Airlines relents, ditches AVN promotion (Updated: Meryl’s mad)

Likely in response to the overwhelming negative reaction to their decision to air a promotion from an anti-vax organization…

Shame on you American Airlines. Anti-vax harms kids.(Updated: AmerAir defends the ad)

and the huge following of the Bad Astronomy blog, American Airlines has decided not to air the AVN interview or include the information in their print magazine.

UPDATE: partial Complete success with American Airlines! | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine.

Tip: Phil Plait

Definitely a win!!! Rational voices sounding off together CAN make a difference.

Thanks to all who retweeted the original post here on DN. As you may know, American Airlines took notice. Phil’s post was the final straw, I assume.

UPDATE: AVN is unhappy about this development.

Yesterday Bangalow-based president of the group Meryl Dorey said the decision was frustrating and the result of an infuriating letter-writing campaign by opponents of her group who did not believe in the freedom of expression or alternate views in a democracy.

“It’s frustrating,'” she added

“This is the sort of thing they do.

“It’s not something that would be of benefit in a democracy to stifle a debate.”

Dear Meryl: That was a profoundly silly thing you just said. There is no debate. You are perfectly free to express your views in other places that will have you or on your own ground. American Airlines is a business that chose not to be associated with said views. The science, however, is very soundly on the side of immunization.

Still scares me a little. Didn’t AA do the same thing last year, or the year before? Or was it another Airline?

Richard Saunders pointed out that AVN says they aren’t anti-vax. Oh yeah?

Why are the Alt Med types (as well as many other proponents of qustionable claims) so quick to wave the Democracy/Constitutional/Censorship flag when they get cornered?

Isn’t it public debate when lots of people chime in with their views. Meryl sounds like she is wanting to suppress views that differ from hers. Sounds like sour grapes to me.
