Carolyn Hoffman was walking along the beach in Delray Beach on Jan. 5 with her husband when something odd caught her eye.
A long, ribbon-shaped fish with a large, bulging eye had washed up in the surf.
“It just rolled up on the beach in front of us,” Hoffman said. “I’ve never seen anything shaped like that.”
Among the various joke suggestions, some have commented that it looks like a sea serpent many people have reported seeing. But notice that it bends side to side, not up and down, so it could not undulate and look like “humps” that eyewitness sea monster sightings relate.
The commentators have also found some VERY good correlation between this photo and that of a dealfish- of the genus Trachipterus, a subgroup of the ribbonfish. Looks about right. A rare find but not unusual.
