On the University of Wales degree debacle

The University of Wales disgraced (but its vice chancellor is promoted).

This story was major news for science advocates and chiropractic critics today. This site has a great rundown of the issues. Basically, the University of Wales is to stop validating other degrees after much criticism. They had previous accredited a chiropractic college.

Quite by chance I spent last night unaware of this but tracking the disgraceful way in which the University of Wales had not only validated degrees in quack science but also areas like business studies and law across the world. The deal appears to have been that you paid for a validation and then got the imprimatur of the University of Wales and access to their online library etc. This literally allowed you to create a college/ business/law school above a shop or in an office with a few computers, employ a few teachers and then offer post graduate work up to PhD level. The Birmingham Graduate School is a gem but their website list dozen of other UK ones. They seem to have had a good line in validating law, business, marketing, theology. missionary studies, Islamic art and religion, drawing – you name it and they found a way of making money from validating and franchising.
